Die Cutting Basics & Tips

The very basics...

This post is just priceless! Not only does it cover the history of die cutting, it discusses ever aspect of getting started. A very comprehensive read!

Another good overall post about die cutting, with lots of links to more advanced techniques.

This post contains all the information you could need for starting out with a Sizzix machine.

Don't take a shortcut!

Wafer dies will only cut 2 sheets at a time.
While it's tempting to try and cut multiple die cuts all at the same time, manufacturers of the thin metal dies now most commonly used recommend no more than two layers of cardstock should be cut at any one time. Forcing more layers of cardstock through with your sandwich will only make your sandwich too thick it will only shorten the life of your die cutting machine and its rollers.

Stop marks from ruining your die cuts!

Keep one sandwich plate for cutting only and this plate will always go next to the paper in the sandwich. Keeping one plate as a "do not cut" pad (ie pristine) is more cost effective.

Eg: Usual Cutting sandwich for a Sizzix machine, bottom to top:
  • Tab 2 on platform
  • Cutting plate
  • Cardstock
  • Die (face down)
  • No cut plate

Cut your own shaped card bases!

Do more with your machine!

This post expands on the general use of your die cutting machine, showing how you can dry emboss with lots of different tools you may already have in your stash.
